Nonsurgical Periodontal Care in Tampa
The gums are one of the most important tissues in your body. They support both the teeth and the jawbone beneath them. Their health influences your systemic health; for example, people with gum disease are more likely to develop diabetes and vice versa.
Naturally, it is important to prevent unhealthy gums from deteriorating. Dr. Brian van Aelst provides gum disease treatments in Tampa, New Tampa, Temple Terrace, and Wesley Chapel. If you live in or near any of these areas, our Tampa periodontist helps you stay healthy before surgical care is required.
Scaling and Planing
Gum disease has three general stages: gingivitis, periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis. The last stage is when gum recession occurs. The severity of this condition requires surgical gum treatment.
However, when gum disease is just starting to transition from gingivitis to periodontitis, it can be halted with scaling and planing.
Scaling and planing, also known as periodontal deep cleaning, is the targeted removal of plaque and tartar. These forms of calculus are the irritants that cause gum disease. Gently using specialized tools above and below the gum line, Dr. van Aelst scales all buildup off the tooth. The root surface is then planed smooth. This step encourages the soft tissue to reattach to the tooth, which closes any pocket formed by gum disease.
Laser Gum Disease Treatment
Dental lasers are a critical tool in the periodontal surgeries we provide. However, they also assist with nonsurgical gum care.
Dental lasers sterilize the areas they treat. When performing a scaling and planning procedure, Dr. van Aelst uses a laser to eliminate all bacteria present in the pocket. This application prevents reinfection. The laser also stimulates the gums and encourages them to heal.
Microdental Treatment
“Microdentistry” refers to the dental treatments that are focused on making as minimal a change to the structure of teeth as possible. Regarding our practice, it is the series of treatments we use to manage caries (small instances of tooth decay) near the gum line. Just like the laser, microdental treatments give our periodontist the ability to protect the gums without stitches or extensive treatment.
In addition to being minimally invasive, the microdentistry we provide gives your general dentist a better vision for your comprehensive treatment plan. Not only does Dr. van Aelst improve your gum health with these treatments, but he also makes your overall oral health easier to maintain.
